AZA SAFE: Saving Animals From Extinction
What is a SAFE program? These programs seek to protect threatened and endangered species around the world through collaboration between AZA accredited zoos and aquariums. For example, the Asian elephant is a SAFE species with more than 15 organizations working together developing plans and programs to help save this species. This SAFE program was established in 2015. Between 2015 and 2019, more than 90 AZA-accredited facilities reported providing a combined total of over $16.5 million to protect elephants in the wild.
